The Tamil film industry and political landscape mourn the loss of a prominent figure, actor and DMDK founder Vijayakanth, fondly known as Captain. His passing at the age of 71, marks the end of an era, as he leaves a legacy of powerful performances and political endeavors that have left an indelible mark on the people’s hearts.
Vijayakanth’s recent health struggles have concerned his fans and well-wishers. He was admitted to MIOT Hospital in Chennai on November 18 due to cough and throat pain. Initially, the hospital reported positive progress, stating that he responded well to treatment for a febrile illness. However, a sudden turn of events within the last 24 hours led to a mild deterioration in his health, necessitating pulmonary support.
In an official statement by MIOT Hospital on Wednesday, they conveyed the news of Vijayakanth’s health setback. The statement expressed optimism about his recovery but acknowledged the need for additional treatment. The hospital projected a further 14-day stay for Vijayakanth under the watchful eyes of medical professionals. After a hospitalization of more than two weeks, Vijayakanth has fully recovered and was discharged on December 8th.
However, he recently re-entered the hospital. Earlier in the day, his party disclosed that he had tested positive for COVID and was placed on a ventilator due to breathing issues. Nevertheless, the hospital bulletin indicated that he was contending with pneumonia.
His final public appearance took place on December 14. Since November of this year, the actor-turned-politician has been dealing with health issues.
Vijayakanth has been unwell and maintained a low profile for the past 4-5 years. On December 14, his wife Premalatha officially assumed leadership of the DMDK, being declared the general secretary during a party meeting in Chennai.
